Owner Spotlight: Shawna Davies
I’m Shawna Davies, the proud owner of Shawna Davies - Chartered Professional Accountant. I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.
My career in accounting began at the young age of sixteen, helping my dad maintain his business books after school. I pursued a career, studying to become a CGA (certified general accountant) while working as a receptionist at a public accounting firm. I received my CGA designation in 2000 and a degree in general studies from the University of Athabasca in 2002. I then worked with the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue as a consumer tax branch auditor, eventually becoming a senior tax auditor with them. In July of 2011, I joined the team at Community Futures East Kootenay as a finance manager while additionally doing my own part-time public accounting.
In early 2019, sensing an opportunity and wanting the freedom to set my hours and have the time I needed to raise my son, I left my position as a finance manager to pursue a full-time practice. Apart from my professional career, I also have been an instructor at the College of the Rockies in various capacities since 1998 and still teach a few courses.
In my nearly thirty years of accounting and experience teaching, I have had the opportunity to truly understand my field and stay up to date with its many developments. I notice that even though the accounting process has been streamlined by technology and the internet, I’m definitely busier than I was back then. I have regular bookkeeping jobs, extra year-end filing, tax returns, consulting gigs, and instructing that keep me busy year-round.
I enjoy the hustle and bustle of my busy life and feel a sense of accomplishment knowing I help my clients sort out their accounts and run their businesses the way they should. While I am generally busy, I appreciate the fact that with my business, I can set my own schedule and take on as much work as I want at any given time.
As an individual, I believe what sets me apart from others is my absolute dedication to honesty and integrity. I strive to run my practice as per guidelines set by our government and taxation authorities. I attribute my success to my customer-centric approach to accounting and my commitment to doing what’s best for my clients.
For example, a client that I started working with several years ago struggled with understanding the process, needing to start off just one section of bookkeeping at a time. Now she fully understands the impacts of the entries she makes, is capable of handling her own books, and even corrects her own mistakes. I can truly say that experiences like this have given me immense satisfaction over the years and continue to inspire me to help others through my practice.
When I am not at work, as I’m sure you can already see, my life is still rather full. When my son was younger, I loved to participate in activities with him, including volunteering to assistant coach his volleyball team. Nowadays, I still stay active. My partner and I enjoy hunting, camping, boating, skiing, and hanging out with our pack of three gorgeous dogs.
I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
